  1. RAUM 4 - A black ink and black color pencil drawing on an 11 x 14 size coquille board. It appears in the paperback, "RAUM," by Carl Sherrell.

Though I have been a reader of science fiction books for over 60 years, and appreciate the sense of wonder they have given me, the books that have impressed me the most are those written about real people accomplishing things that are so incredible they take your breath away . . .

A book like "1776'" by David McCullough, the story of George Washington and the Revolutionary War. Washington was a man with no military training who was nevertheless "drafted" by Congress to take charge of an army that did not even exist at that time! His mission? To start with "nothing," build an army and Navy and defeat the greatest military force in the world at that time, the British army and navy. And he did it! Unbelievable! . . .

A book like, "River of Doubt," by Candice Millard. The true story of Theodore Roosevelt's journey deep into the unexplored Amazon jungle in 1913. A harrowing exploration of one of the most dangerous rivers on Earth. No book of fiction, of any kind, can match it's power for telling the true story of men facing danger and death in a land of terror; a jungle that nature designed to kill.

The "wonder" we humans should really appreciate is in our own true history, the stories of real people doing astonishing feats of daring and courage, accomplishing things that were seemingly impossible . . .

Look up at the moon tonight. Think about it, a few human beings have actually walked on it's surface! If the "wonder" of that doesn't stir your mind, you are still an ape . . .

Look at the people who walk around today with someone else's heart beating inside them. If you do not feel the "wonder" of that in your soul, you are still a fish.
